Abstract
In recent blood transfusion practice, there has been great changes combined by various aspects. We analized the changing patterns of whole blood and of blood component use in each clinical department and each diseases, the aspect of autologous
transfusion and directed transfusion in Ewha Womans University Hospital during 10 years.
The method of study that we examined blood were bank statistic data about transfused blood during 11 years (1982-1992) and blood bank records from Jan. to Dec., 1992.
The use of total blood components increased 2.5-fold from 4,105 units to 10,200 units from 1982 to 1990. Whole blood use decreased from 93.1% to 3.1% from 1982 to 1992, but increased in the use of packed red blood cells and platelet
concentration,
54.8%, 22.5%, respectively. The whole blood was used mainly in orthopedic surgery, cardiovascular surgery and exchange transfusion of pediatric department. Autologous blood donations and directed blood donations were performed total 33 patients,
74
episodes, respectively, in 1992.
A dialoque and studies between the transfusing physician and the transfusion medicine specialist were desirable for more effective and appropriate used of blood component and improvement of transfusion practice.
